El Castellano

The following list is a collection of words, slang, and expressions I’ve learned since I first arrived in Spain.  Reader Discretion is advised.

Acho/Acha

  1. Hombre/Mujer. “Acho, como estas?” Synonyms – “Hombre,” and  “Coño.”

Aguafiestas

  1. Wet Blanket. Party pooper.  “Maria, olvidate del trabajo. No seas una aguafiestas.”

Borde

  1. A jerk, in a bad mood, or lacking sense of humor.

Cabrear

  1. To anger or bother. Synonym – “Enfadar.”

Caña

  1. A glass of beer. “Una caña, por favor.”

Capullo

  1. The head of the penis. Used as an insult.

Chacho/Chacha

  1. Hombre/Mujer. “Chacha, que tal?”

Chungo(a)

  1. A dangerous person. Thug.

Cocido

  1. Drunk. “Jaime esta bien cocido.”

Cutre

  1. Lame. “Que Cutre!”

“Doy Fe”

  1. Give Faith. Used when recommending something. “La nueva pelicula de Woody Allen es la leche. Doy fe!”

Efectivamente

  1. Affirmative statement. ” ‘Quieres ensaladilla?’ ‘Efectivamente.’ “

Follar

  1. To fuck. 

Fritanga

  1. The unpleasant smell of fried food that lingers on clothes.

Garrulo

  1. Tacky. Rude mannered. Synonym – “Philistine” 

Garruta

  1. A place rented by a group of friends during the winter break for hanging out. “Acho, vamos a beber en la garruta.”

Gilipolla

  1. An insult similar to asshole. Literally, man without penis.

Gobanilla

  1. Wrist. Synonym – “Muñeca.” Jumilla

Guay

  1. Cool.  “El coche nuevo de Toyota es muy guay.”

Hostia

  1. Damn. “Hostia! I forgot my wallet!”
  2. Awesome. “Esta banana es la hostia!” “Sois la hostia!”
  3. A hit. “Me dio una hostia en la cabeza!”

“Jode!”

  1. Expressive word for many different occasions.  Can be used positively or negatively. “Jode! Tengo que trabajar.” Similar to “Hostia” and “Leche.”

Leche

  1. Similar to Hostia. “Leche! Not tengo dinero.” “Sois la leche.”
  2. “Mala Leche” – Similar to Borde.
  3. “Ni Leche” – “No nothing.”

Licinciao/Licinciá

  1. A nosey person. Offensively curious or inquisitive.  Synonym – “Cotilla.” Jumilla.

Maridaje

  1. The combination of food and wine. “Vino y queso es un maridaje que sabe a beso.”

“Me cago…”

  1. …en la leche/ en la puta/ en dios! – “I don’t give a damn!”

Mola

  1. Cool.  “La nueva pelicula de Tarantino esta mola.”

Nona

  1. Penis.  “Tonto la nona!” 

Ortera

  1. A person lacking a sense of style.

“Pagar en efectivo”

  1. To pay cash.

Pijo(a)

  1. Penis. 
  2. Posh. “Maria no como en los barres. Es muy pija.”

“Que Timo!”

  1. “What a rip off!”

Rapin

  1. Vagina.

Resaca

  1. Hangover.  “Chacho, me cago en la resaca!”

“Tengo Monos en la Cara!”

  1. Expression used when confronting someone who is staring at you.

Vale

  1. Okay. “Me llamas mañana?” “Vale.”

Venga

  1. Okay. Similar to “Vale.”

Zagal

  1. An infant.
